Community Aged Care on the Agenda

Release: 9th February 2008

Esset Australia is pleased to announce the launch of a new community aged care training initiative across Southern Australia.

Through the Community Aged Care Workforce Development Program, a training initiative funded by the Australian Government, Department of Health and Ageing, Esset Australia will support approximately 140 community care workers and managers over the next two years across 27 community aged care service providers in Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT.

The initiative is focused on the delivery of national qualifications to support workers as they provide quality care to a diverse range of clients. The qualifications, covering home and community care, and also service coordination principles, will qualify some participants for the first time, and upgrade the skills of existing workers in a wide range of key topic areas, including:

  • Infection control;
  • Dementia;
  • Maintaining independence;
  • Supporting group activities;
  • Manual handling;
  • Risk management;
  • Care planning; and
  • Food safety.

The initiative also aims to address barriers to training in rural and remote areas in each state, by providing flexible delivery of a range of programs on site in service provider facilities.

Mr Phill Bevan, Managing Director of Esset Australia, describes the initiative as "further targeted support and skill development programs for community care workers in our communities to access training and skill development opportunities they would not otherwise be able to do."

"Barriers to participation in training by community care workers that have been identified through previous projects include a lack of confidence to study, the cost of training, time to study, literacy and numeracy levels, and difficulty accessing training. The Department of Health and Ageing has provided funds to address these issues so that these care workers have further training options to cope with the increasing and changing skills needs of the community aged care industry and to ensure the high quality of care for clients."
