2007 Aged Care Training Initiative

Release: 16th January 2007

Esset Australia is pleased to announce the launch of a new aged care training initiative in 2007.

Through the Better Skills for Better Care Program, a training initiative funded by the Australian Government, Department of Health and Ageing, Esset Australia will work with personal care workers throughout 2007 and early 2008 across sixteen Tasmanian and Victorian aged care facilities.

The initiative will focus on the delivery of the Certificate III and IV in Aged Care qualifications, and the Certificate IV in Community Services (Lifestyle and Leisure). The courses will qualify some participants for the first time, and upgrade the skills of existing aged care workers in key topic areas, including:

  • Infection Control
  • Dementia
  • Palliative Care
  • Diversional Therapy
  • Manual Handling
  • Risk Management
  • Care Planning
  • Food Safety

The project continues to address barriers to training in rural and remote areas of Tasmania, by providing flexible delivery of a range of programs on site in aged care facilities.

Phill Bevan, Managing Director of Esset Australia , describes the project as "further targeted support and skill development programs for personal care workers in residential facilities to access training and skill development opportunities they would not otherwise be able to do."

"Barriers to participation in training by aged care workers that have been identified through previous projects include a lack of confidence to study, the cost of training, time to study, literacy and numeracy levels, and difficulty accessing training. The Department of Health and Ageing has provided funds to address these issues so that personal care workers have further training options to cope with the increasing and changing skills needs of the aged care industry and to ensure the high quality of care for residents."
