National Agreement with APA

Release: 22nd January 2010

The APA has completed an agreement with Esset Australia for the delivery of nationally accredited training for physiotherapy assistants and support staff.

With the population rapidly ageing in Australia and the consequent need for health services, there is a widening gap between the availability of physiotherapists and the demand for their services.

Although this gap is evident across Australia, rural and regional communities have greater difficulty in accessing physiotherapy services. In 2004, the APA began working with the Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council to develop competencies for a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (Physiotherapy). In 2007, following wide consultation with the profession, the APA voted to create a membership category for physiotherapy assistants. Esset Australia, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), is proud to announce a continuing agreement with the APA to deliver nationally accredited training for physiotherapy assistants and support staff in physiotherapy practices and facilities. A team of highly qualified health professionals, headed by Esset Australia Project Consultant Dr Sandra Mercer Moore, will deliver the following qualifications for staff of physiotherapists:

  • Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance
  • Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance
  • Certificate III in Health Administration
  • Certificate IV in Health Administration
  • Diploma of Practice Management

With the possibility of accessing Commonwealth Government incentives for many of the practice employees through Australian Apprenticeship Traineeships, physiotherapists may find that the cost of training is significantly reduced. In addition some practise employees may also be eligible for State Government incentives which can also be discussed with your respective Australian Apprenticeship Centre. Esset Australia can steer employers to those funding options that will assist physiotherapists in achieving the most cost effective training solution for their practice.

Esset Australia offers flexible, customised training solutions including delivery in the workplace, online, distance, workshops or a blended mix. Training materials and teaching resources will be contextualised by physiotherapists for the staff of physiotherapists.
